Learn More About Ballet Chelsea …
Ballet Chelsea is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which provides professional-level dance training to dance students, through performance opportunities, enrichment activities, master classes, summer intensives and pre-professional studies. They are supported by the Wilkinson Foundation and the Worthington Family Foundation.
Ballet Chelsea builds strong individuals through high caliber training and performance excellence while giving back to the audience that supports them through arts education and community outreach.
The organization was formed in 1995 to provide supplemental dance training and performance opportunities to young dancers in Chelsea. Since that time Ballet Chelsea’s membership, programming and performance opportunities have greatly expanded.
Ballet Chelsea’s company membership has grown to nearly 70 male and female company members from Ann Arbor, Chelsea, Dexter, Grass Lake, Jackson, Manchester, Stockbridge and Ypsilanti. Members have myriad performance opportunities including full length ballets, an annual benefit concert and community outreach activities at local schools, hospitals, senior centers and libraries. Their young artists also participate and perform in events such as the Michigan Youth Arts Festival and Youth America Grand Prix. In addition to the master classes offered initially, Ballet Chelsea programming now includes a comprehensive Summer Dance Intensive, Pre-Professional Program and, beginning soon, an Adaptive Dance Program.
Ballet Chelsea’s Adaptive Dance Program (ADP) gives movement classes to residents ages 3 – 93 with a wide range of abilities taking exercise classes to those who may otherwise not have fitness programs available to them. Each class is tailor made to the needs and abilities of the participants and aims to improve coordination and balance, endurance, flexibility, self-confidence and for students – teamwork.
Ballet Chelsea established its own facility and dance school, Ballet Chelsea Studios, which opened in August 2014. The new studio brings dance education to a broader community-based audience including over 300 students, and room for growth and new programming which seeks to serve a far broader community constituency. Our state-of-the-art facility supports increased curriculum for all ages including Pilates, Conditioning, Highland Step, Musical Theatre, Lyrical, Yoga and dance classes for adults, in addition to our established base of Ballet, Pointe, Variations, Partnering, Modern, Jazz, Tap and Hip-Hop.
